From Goodreads:
The author of Between Shades of Gray returns to WWII in this epic novel that shines a light on one of the war's most devastating—yet unknown—tragedies.
In 1945, World War II is drawing to a close in East Prussia, and thousands of refugees are on a desperate trek toward freedom, almost all of them with something to hide. Among them are Joana, Emilia, and Florian, whose paths converge en route to the ship that promises salvation, the Wilhelm Gustloff. Forced by circumstance to unite, the three find their strength, courage, and trust in each other tested with each step closer toward safety.
Just when it seems freedom is within their grasp, tragedy strikes. Not country, nor culture, nor status matter as all ten thousand people aboard must fight for the same thing: survival.
My Thoughts:
I've always been fascinated by World War II stories and Ruta Sepetys' Between Shades of Gray has been one of the best in my opinion. Throughout the novel I could tell that she did her research and managed to transport readers to a place that they might not have wanted to go to, but needed to go in order to fully understand the depth of depravity that people experienced during that time. Her novel was not easy to read, but it is one of the most important novel I ever read. I cried and it ripped my heart to shreds, but it was beautifully written and in the end gave me hope for humanity.
I truly believe that Ruta Sepetys is one of the best historical fiction authors writing in the young adult genre. I believe her dedication to her research and the subject matter will make for another remarkable novel that I cannot wait to read.
I haven't read Between Shades of Grey yet, but I've been meaning to. This sounds equally good. I hope you get to read, and enjoy, it soon. Thanks for sharing, and happy Wednesday. :)

ReplyDeleteI usually don't read historical fiction either; however, after picking up Between Shades of Gray when it was recommended to me and falling in love with it, I will probably always read Ruta Sepetys' books. :)
DeleteThis isn't really my type of read, but I've heard wonderful things about the author. Really hope you love it.
ReplyDeleteI'm not much of a historical fiction person. I rarely read it. I hope you enjoy this one! Thanks for stopping by The Cover Contessa!
ReplyDeleteI'm the same way. Between Shades of Gray was probably my very first historical fiction, but i was blown away by Ruta Sepetys story telling, so I have to keep reading her books. :)
DeleteI LOVE your thoughts on this author's work! Very well-written! And your mini-review has made me want to read this novel! When I was around 12, I was obsessed with WWII movies, for some reason. I'm not quite that way anymore, but this period in history still fascinates me. GREAT pick!!! Onto my Goodreads shelves it goes!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by and commenting on my own WOW post!! : )
